A large, bumblebee-like orchid bee with golden-yellow thoracic hairs and a metallic blue-black abdomen. It is one of the largest orchid bees and an important pollinator of tropical epiphytic orchids. Males perform complex hovering displays to attract mates using collected fragrances.
